We’re practicing!
May Day May 1, 2011

An excellent May Day. Weather was great; we even saw the sun at sunrise. Host team Thornden Morris and the Bassett Street Hounds, Ribbonsteel Rapper, Heartwood Morris, and Griffin’s Corners Morris also participated. Kenny Holmes made his morris performing debut as the newest member of Wild Blue Morris; we danced “Old Woman Tossed Up” and “Lollipop Man” at Thornden Park. Later we did “Evesham”, and through a musical mixup ended up inventing a new dance on the spot, “Trunkles” (same as “Cuckoo’s Nest” but with a turn on the spot at the end of the B music).

It has recently come to our attention that there is on the market a beverage known as Wild Blue Blueberry Lager. It is nominally brewed by Bluedawg Brewing in Baldwinsville, NY. Given that one of our team members lives in Baldwinsville (and dances with dawgs on the Bassett Street Hounds) one might imagine there is some sort of connection between it and us. One might be wrong.
Bluedawg Brewing is in fact a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch; the craft-brewing façade is nothing more than that, and the beverage, according to one Wild Blue Morris dancer who was courageous enough to try it at our meeting last night, tastes like a wine cooler. Your humble correspondent stuck with a Magic Hat variety.
Oh yes, we had a meeting. Decisions were made, the most significant of which is that we begin this year’s practice season on February 10. Onward to Season 4! I hope we don’t get cancelled.

We had a fine time tonight with the Bassett Street Hounds at our third danceout of the year. We danced at Onondaga Lake Park, for a longer stand than I was expecting — but we had an audience, so we kept going. Wild Blue did five of the four dances in our repertoire (one of them twice…) — not to mention Balance the Straw, which isn’t in our repertoire, but we did it anyway. (In principle that was a mass dance, though it turned out the Hounds who danced in were also on Wild Blue.) We even got a few audience members to do “Shepherd’s Hey” with us.
Afterward we went to the Retreat for food and drink (I think a third of us had appetizers, a third had dessert, and a third just had beer) and conversation, and a rendition of “Happy Birthday” for Fred and Rick.
A grand evening. Thanks to all!

In observation of Bulgarian Education and Culture, and Slavonic Literature Day, we’ll be making our third public appearance of 2010 on May 24 at 7:00 pm. We’ll be at Onondaga Lake Park, near the yacht club, and joining us for the occasion will be the Bassett Street Hounds. Come hang out with us!

We had a fine busy weekend that included our first performances of “Haste to the Wedding” as well as our older repertoire, early Saturday morning on the hill in Thornden Park and later at Onondaga Lake Park and the Baldwinsville Library, and more dancing on Sunday at Cortland’s May Day celebration. Lost one dancer there to a twisted ankle (we had to shoot him) (wait, no, we didn’t). Lunch afterward at Garcia’s, and talk of our next venture…

We’ll make our first 2010 appearance on Saturday, May 1 at Thornden Morris’s (28th?) annual May Day celebration by the water tower in Thornden Park in Syracuse. Also appearing will be the Bassett Street Hounds, Ribbonsteel Rapper, Heartwood Morris, and Snowbelt Morris. The festivities start at sunrise (6:00 am); our first dance is scheduled for 6:25 and our second for 7:00, but that could change.
Later we’re at Onondaga Lake Park (9:45 am) and Baldwinsville Public Library (11:00 am).
Next day we and Heartwood will do more May Day-ish dancing in Cortland. We’ll start at 11:30 am with a dance or two at the Unitarian Universalist church, then proceed to Courthouse Park.
See you there.

We had a nice practice last night, working on our corner dance…
Probably two more practices (we’re adding one on Thursday the 29th) before May Day! We’ll be there on the hill in Thornden Park at sunrise. And probably elsewhere later in the day, but we don’t have those details yet.

Wild Blue Morris will start practicing again soon (in a couple weeks) for our third year of activity. By all means give us a shout if you’re in Central New York and think you might be interested in doing some dancing with us. You can even use this convenient contact form:
